Great Decisions Discussion Series

It's that time again! Eight provocative topics will provide the basis for this always interesting and stimulating global issues discussion series. The more diverse the opinions (and they usually are) the more thought-provoking and rousing the conversations.
Great Decisions, sponsored by the League of Women Voters Winnetka-Northfield-Kenilworth and the Library, will take place for eight consecutive weeks. Attend one session or all.
Foreign Policy Association briefing booklets containing an informative article on each topic are available for purchase for $20. The library has several copies available for checkout.   For more information or to purchase a booklet, contact Joan Fragen, (847) 446-0184 or

Each session begins with a short DVD introduction to the subject, providing a segue to the group's discussion. Please join us, and bring your friends!

Week 2

Russia’s foreign policy

By Allen C. Lynch

Under President Vladimir Putin, Russia is projecting an autocratic model of governance abroad and working to undermine the influence of liberal democracies, namely along Russia’s historical borderlands. Russia caused an international uproar in 2016, when it interfered in the U.S. presidential contest. But Putin’s foreign policy toolkit includes other instruments, from alliances with autocrats to proxy wars with the U.S. in Georgia, Ukraine and Syria.  How should the United States respond to Putin’s foreign policy ambitions?
